“A Major Dad” The Rocky Mountain News – Sunday Spotlight of Bill Thiebaut

Born in Santa Fe,New Mexico, in 1947, he moved as a small child with his family to Pueblo where he was raised. He met his wife, Mary Ann, while he was a high school student attending the Abbey School in CañonCity, and she was at the corresponding Catholic girls’ high school, St. Scholastica.

Thiebaut is an attorney and he and his wife, Mary Ann, are the parents of 15 children. When he was elected Colorado Senate Majority Leader and became the head of an 18-seat majority, he noted that it was nice to finally serve in a chamber that had more Democrats than he had children.

Thiebaut and his family really do represent what family values are all about. The Thiebaut children are all high achievers and are the kind of children we would all be proud of – a testament to the caring parenting of Bill and Mary Ann. Their children have put themselves through college with work and the use of merit scholarships; they have participated in the Peace Corps; they have played professionally sports and coached; and many have committed themselves to public service – in fact, seven children have been or are public school teachers and one is a decorated police officer. And throughout their lives, the older children have always helped out the younger children. He is also the proud grandfather of 26 grandchildren, to date.

Thiebaut’s strong sense of family extends to his commitment to his community, which is part of the source of his popularity and strong political support. As a legislator, and now as Pueblo District Attorney, he speaks about community as an ideal of the extended family; after all, a community, like a large extended family, may have diverse opinions and disagreements but, in the end, a community must pull together for the common good.
